Kenny Youngar: Texas Powerhouse Drummer Whose Secret Is In His Sticks

 "It's All In The Sticks"

~Kenny Youngar~

Dallas‑based Kenny Youngar, powerhouse drummer for the band Messer, has a simple philosophy about staying at the top of his game: it’s all in the sticks. Youngar swears by Solobeat drumsticks, especially his own Kenny Youngar Signature Texas Edition brand — a grip‑enhanced Oak 5B built for durability, balance, and the kind of controlled aggression that defines his flamboyant style!

Whether he’s driving Messer’s high‑energy live shows or laying down precision tracks in the studio, Kenny’s signature sticks have become an extension of his identity behind the kit, proving that the right tools in the right hands can make all the difference!

Click on the picture to enlarge

The 5th Annual Las Vegas Drum Show took over the Tuscany Suites & Casino on Sunday, March 29th, transforming the ballroom into a powerhouse of rhythm, innovation, and pure percussion energy. This year’s show featured close to 90 booths (I counted), packed wall‑to‑wall with drum kits, cymbals, hardware, accessories, boutique builds, custom components, and the newest wave of percussion‑focused apparel and gear. For drummers, collectors, and rhythm lovers, it felt like walking into a candy store built entirely out of groove!

Musicians traveled from across the United States to be part of the event, joining a strong showing of Las Vegas’ own rock and entertainment community. The star‑studded attendee list included Kenny Youngar (Messer Band) from Texas, along with local and national rock heavyweights such as Eric Singer, Stoney Curtis, Barry Barnes, JP Michaels, James Sloan, Corky Gainsford, Les Warner, Blas Elias, Brent Fitz, Brian Tichy, Jeff Tortora, and more. Adding to the excitement, Carmen Hayes‑Warner made her debut appearance as the newest reporter for Drum Talk TV, capturing interviews and behind‑the‑scenes moments throughout the day.

Beyond the gear and celebrity sightings, the show delivered a full slate of drum clinics, offering players of all levels the chance to learn from seasoned pros. From technique deep‑dives to performance insights, the clinics kept seats filled and sticks tapping. The event also featured a lively raffle loaded with high‑end drum and percussion merchandise, giving attendees the chance to walk away with serious upgrades to their setups.

What stood out most this year was the clear evolution of drum merchandise and design. Exhibitors showcased fresh innovations in hardware engineering, shell construction, boutique craftsmanship, and modernized components that reflect where the percussion world is heading. Even the apparel and accessories sector showed major growth, with brands leaning into bold identity, drummer‑centric fashion, and lifestyle‑driven creativity.

{My Take}

The 5th Annual Las Vegas Drum Show proved once again why this event has become a cornerstone of the city’s music community. With national artists, local legends, innovative vendors, and passionate fans all under one roof, the day delivered nonstop energy and inspiration. From the clinics to the raffles to the sheer volume of cutting‑edge gear, every corner of the Tuscany Suites & Casino ballroom pulsed with creativity and connection. Another unforgettable year — and the beat in Las Vegas just keeps getting stronger.

What an awesome show — and a powerful reminder that in Las Vegas, the beat never stops!

See you next year!

Rush Is Back In 2026 With New Drummer Anika Nilles: What Are The Main Reasons Why They Might Have Chosen Her?

 Rush Is Back!

Canadian prog-rock legends Rush are gearing up for their first tour in over a decade, aptly titled the “Fifty Something” Tour, and they’ve tapped German sensation Anika Nilles to sit behind the drums!

Founding members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson shared in an October 2025 statement that the trek will celebrate Rush’s music, legacy, and the life of late drummer Neil Peart, while introducing “another remarkable person; an incredible drummer and musician” to their fanbase.

Born in Aschaffenburg, Germany, on May 29, 1983, Anika Nilles didn’t dive into professional drumming until her mid-20s. After spending five years training as a social worker and teaching preschool, she enrolled at Germany’s University of Popular Music and Music Business in Mannheim. There, she mastered not only advanced rhythmic techniques but also essential skills in self-promotion, tax handling, and social media management—tools that would prove invaluable as she launched her solo career and international drum clinic tours.

Why Rush Picked Anika Nilles

Proven progressive chops and technical mastery, making her adept at navigating Rush’s complex time signatures and dynamic shifts.

A ringing endorsement from Geddy Lee’s bass tech, who toured with Jeff Beck and returned home raving about “this drummer named Anika Nilles” after watching her command Beck’s rhythm section.

Deep industry savvy from her academic focus on the business side of music, ensuring she’s as comfortable with logistics and promotion as she is behind the drums.

International touring experience and a reputation as a world-class educator and clinician, demonstrated through drum-education tours across Europe and the U.S. since 2015.

Fresh energy and perspective that honor Neil Peart’s legacy while writing a new chapter in the band’s storied history, as Lee and Lifeson seek to celebrate 50-something years of Rush music with both fidelity and flair.

With dates kicking off June 7, 2026, at L.A.’s Kia Forum and winding up September 17 in Cleveland, fans are buzzing to see how Nilles handles such a near-impossible role. As Rush mixes classic deep cuts with fan favorites across a rotating setlist of 35 songs, all eyes will be on the drummer who bridged a decade-long gap—proving that sometimes the most surprising choices make the grandest statements.

Beyond the tour, look for Anika’s upcoming solo album False Truth (due late 2025) to showcase the same blend of jazz-fusion flair and rock-driven power that captured Rush’s attention—and soon, the world’s.

{My Take}

Neil Peart set the seismic standard for rock drumming with his self-taught ingenuity, jazzy flourishes and mythic storytelling that turned every Rush album into an epic voyage, whereas Anika Nilles brings academic polish, viral-ready precision and a nimble groove sensibility that thrives in odd meters and modern fusion alike. Peart’s towering solos were larger-than-life spectacles built on solitude and sheer force of will, while Nilles invites listeners into her process through clinic-style cues, social-media dialogue and a balance of power and pocket that feels both intimate and electrifying. Though she’ll inevitably be measured against Peart’s colossal legacy, her refined technique and fresh perspective promise a chapter in which Rush’s time-twisting rhythms resonate with a new generation, honoring the past even as they sprint toward tomorrow.

Tips For Musicians How To Land an Endorsement Deal

In my previous blog. I discussed what musicians' endorsements are, and the various types of endorsements that exist in the music industry. < Read Here >

Today, I'm discussing how to secure an endorsement deal.

Landing an endorsement deal as a musician is about building relationships, showing value to a brand, and being marketable. Here are some practical tips to help you secure one of these endorsements.

Build Your Brand First

  • Be active online: Brands want exposure. Maintain a solid presence on social media, YouTube, TikTok, or a personal website.

  • Look professional: Use quality photos, consistent branding, and engaging content that reflects your musical identity.

  • Show growth: Highlight your following, gigging history, streams, or album sales.

Use the Product Authentically

  • Only go after companies whose gear you already use and believe in.

  • Tag the brand in posts and videos where you use their gear—it gets you on their radar naturally.

Network Like Crazy

  • Go to trade shows (like NAMM), clinics, and local events.

  • Connect with company reps, artist relations managers, or endorsed musicians.

  • Be personable—relationships lead to deals.

Create a Solid Pitch

  • Put together an Electronic Press Kit (EPK): bio, press coverage, performance clips, audience stats, and how you’d benefit the brand.

  • Explain how you can help them, not just what you want. Mention your tour schedule, audience reach, and content plans.

Start Small and Grow

  • Don’t shoot for Gibson or Fender right away. Smaller or boutique companies are more likely to take a chance on emerging artists.

  • Build a track record with smaller endorsements—it adds credibility when approaching bigger brands later.

Be Professional and Consistent

  • Respond promptly and respectfully to communication.

  • Follow through with the promotion if they send you gear.

  • Stay active and visible in your music scene.

Stay Genuine

  • Don’t just chase freebies—brands can tell when you're not passionate about their product.

  • Authenticity translates to better partnerships and long-term opportunities.

{My Take}

Signing an endorsement deal is a major milestone—but it’s not the finish line. It marks the start of a professional relationship that requires consistency, visibility, and mutual respect. Treat it like a business partnership: deliver on your end, stay engaged, and continue growing as an artist.

The more value you bring to the table—on stage, online, and in your community—the stronger your relationship with the brand will be. And as your career evolves, so will the opportunities. Stay grounded, stay genuine, and use the endorsement wisely.

Good Luck!

What Are Musicians Endorsements And What Types Of Endorsements Are There?

A few weeks ago, I attended the Las Vegas Drum Show at the Tuscany Hotel.

As I walked by the exhibit booths, I overheard conversations about the drums, gear, and accessories, as well as discussions about endorsement deals.

Most musicians are aware of what endorsements are and how they can benefit from having them.

For today.

I'll be talking mostly to the fans (And new artists to the music industry) about what endorsement deals are and what types of endorsements exist.

What is a musician endorsement?

A musician endorsement is a mutually beneficial partnership between an artist and a brand—usually a company that makes musical instruments, gear, or accessories.

In this relationship:

The musician publicly supports or promotes the brand, often by using their products in live performances, studio recordings, and on social media.

In turn, the brand supports the musician by providing gear at a discount, for free, or even with financial compensation. They might also offer promotional opportunities (like featuring the artist on their website or social media).

{My Take}

It’s not just about “free gear”—brands expect visibility, credibility, and influence in return. They’re investing in artists who can help them reach more customers.

----------

Types Of Musicians' Endorsement Deals

Here is a breakdown of the different types of musician endorsements, from entry-level to top-tier Rock Star status.

Affiliate/Influencer Partnerships

Who it’s for: Musicians with a decent online following or niche influence.

What you get: Discount codes, affiliate links (you earn commission), sometimes free gear for content creation.

What you do: Promote products on social media, YouTube, or livestreams.

Product Endorsements (Entry-Level or Partial)

Who it’s for: Gigging musicians, small touring acts, music educators, or content creators with consistent engagement.

What you get: Discounted gear (artist pricing), early access to new products.

What you do: Use the gear publicly, tag the brand, maybe appear in company promos or online features.

Full Artist Endorsements

Who it’s for: Professional musicians, touring artists, or those with a strong regional/national following.

What you get: Free gear, sometimes custom equipment, and possible promotion on brand platforms.

What you do: Represent the brand exclusively in that category (e.g., only play their guitars or use their amps), be featured in marketing, and maintain visibility.

Signature Deals

Who it’s for: Established artists with major name recognition.

What you get: Custom gear designed with or for you (e.g., signature guitar, pedal, drumsticks), royalties on sales.

What you do: Collaborate in product design, help promote the gear heavily, and represent the brand at events or in media.

Sponsorships

Who it’s for: Artists with massive exposure (tours, big online presence, mainstream media).

What you get: Financial backing, tour support, heavy promotion, exclusive contracts.

What you do: Act as a brand ambassador, sometimes appearing in ads, events, or performing at brand-sponsored events.

{My Take}

Endorsements are not the same as sponsorships.
Endorsements usually involve gear, while sponsorships often involve money.

Endorsements and sponsorships can be game-changing for musicians—but they’re not just about free gear or bragging rights. These partnerships thrive on authenticity, professionalism, and mutual value. Whether you're just starting to build your brand or you're ready to pitch to major companies, focus on creating real relationships, being active in your scene, and consistently showing why you’re worth the investment.

Remember, the best endorsement deals come when you’re already endorsing the product naturally. Stay true to your sound, your style, and your journey—and the right brands will take notice.
