Where The Noise In Your Head Becomes Clarity: Where's Your Happy Place At?

It’s funny how the mind works—take mine, for example. Sunday evening, while I was covering Sally Steele’s Vegas Rocks! Magazine Music Awards red carpet, every time a rock star strutted past, one thought kept hitting me: Where’s their Happy Place? I’m betting it’s playing music—maybe right there onstage, inside the roar, plugged straight into the electricity of a crowd.

*To read about Sally Steele's Vegas Rocks! Magazine Music Awards, click < Here >

So I called my card‑playing buddy, who also happens to be one of the top shrinks in Las Vegas, did a little digging, and came up with this rock‑writer diagnosis.

A Happy Place isn’t some soft-focus fantasy—it’s that real-world pocket where your pulse drops, your shoulders loosen, and the static in your head finally shuts up. You don’t choose it; you feel it. Maybe it’s a bar booth with perfect low light, maybe it’s a stretch of desert where the wind wipes the slate clean. It’s built from memory, instinct, and the body’s quiet way of saying, “Yeah… stay here.”

What makes these places special is the charge they carry—like plugging your soul into a socket that actually fits. They’re wired with safety, nostalgia, and sensory details that hit like a favorite guitar riff. Neon buzzing overhead, the hush of trees, the hum of a casino floor at 2 AM—whatever the flavor, a Happy Place is a personal sanctuary, a backstage pass to your own peace.

I’m pretty sure every rock star on that red carpet was already standing dead‑center in theirs. Music is their oxygen, their fuel, their whole universe. Whether they’re humming a tune alone, jamming with friends, or standing under the blaze of a sold‑out crowd, the second they’re wrapped in the sound they love, they’re home.

My Happy Place? Same one I’ve lived in for 58 years: writing. Every time I sit down and start stringing words together, everything clicks into place and the world feels right again.

Where's your Happy Place at?

Boomerang: The Heartbreak Of Loving Someone Who Keeps Coming Back Broken!

{My Take}

Folks, we all know somebody who’s been dragged through the darker backroads of life. The ones who drink ‘til their buddies can’t recognize ’em… the ones who stare into the mirror and don’t see the same soul looking back. They swear off the bottle, only to get yanked right back into that same old storm.

This song is for them—every friend, every brother, every sister who’s been caught in that hard‑living loop. Boomerang is dedicated to the ones still fighting to find their way home!

{The Story Behind The Song}

Underneath all the dust and neon lights of Las Vegas, Boomerang is a story about a man trapped in a hard‑hitting loop. He’s a man caught in a sorrowful loop — drinking until he turns into a stranger nobody knows anymore, not even the folks who love him most. Every time he slips back into those old ways, he fades into a ghost of the man he used to be, leaving nothing but worry and empty space behind. And somehow, he still manages to stand back up… only to tumble right back into the same hurting cycle that breaks hearts every time it comes around.

Underneath the story is a bigger truth. Boomerang isn’t just about alcohol — it’s about how easy it is for any of us to lose ourselves to the wrong things. Addiction, bad choices, toxic love, chasing ambition too hard, carrying grief too long… all those forces can slowly bend a person into someone their loved ones barely recognize. That “ghost” in the song is a symbol of that painful transformation — when you look in the mirror and don’t see the same soul staring back, and when the people who care about you feel like they’re losing you one piece at a time.

I want you to listen to the song yourself. See if it reminds you of someone close to you. See if it hits you the way it hit me.

Sometimes a song doesn’t just tell a story — it shines a light on one we’ve lived ourselves!

The Psychology Behind the Performance: As A Rock Writer How I Look At The Show!

 My friends tell me that I look at life (And music) a little differently than others do.

This might just be why!

In my early years, I spent more time studying psychology than English or writing, and it’s paid off every night I’m in a room full of musicians. I don’t just listen to a performance — I read it. I watch who steps forward, who hangs back, who commands the room, and who disappears into the shadows. The music industry is a living map of personality types. The Type A firestarters are easy to spot; they take the lead onstage, run the show offstage, and treat every fan interaction like part of the mission. The Type B cool‑rollers drift through the scene with a relaxed grin, keeping the vibe loose and the jams flowing. The Type C quiet operators stay focused, organized, and emotionally tucked in — the ones who make sure the gear works, the harmonies lock, and the chaos stays controlled. And then there are the Type D pressure‑carriers who feel every high and low like a shockwave, often working twice as hard because they care twice as much.

After decades of watching bands from dive bars to big stages, I’ve learned this: the music isn’t just in the notes — it’s in the personalities. Who leads, who follows, who connects, who hides, who mingles with fans, who vanishes backstage. Psychology taught me that every show is more than a performance. It’s a human puzzle, and once you know how to read the pieces, you can see the whole industry for what it really is.

To all my musician peeps: Which type are you?

Ever think about how you look at life and things? It's a big part of who you are!

Riding The Highs Surviving The Lows: The Music Biz Rollercoaster How Not To Fall Off

 Life’s a wild ride, man — every path you take is lined with peaks that make you feel ten feet tall and valleys that punch you right in the gut. I play poker on the side, and if you want a masterclass in emotional whiplash, sit at a table for a few hours. One minute you’re a legend, the next you’re wondering why the universe hates you.

And the music industry? Oh, brother… that’s a whole different beast.

It’s loud, it’s chaotic, it’s beautiful, and it can chew you up like a broken guitar string. I’ve watched killer musicians — real-deal talent, the kind that makes your spine tingle — get knocked so far off their game that they either walked away for a breather or bailed out completely. That’s the kind of heartbreak you don’t forget.

So, what’s the secret to surviving the storm without losing your soul? After digging through a few hours of research, swapping stories with one of my closest friends — a local psychologist who’s seen the backstage bruises up close — and mixing in a little of my own life mileage, here’s what I’ve learned.

Stay grounded — When the spotlight hits, it feels like you’re floating. When it shuts off, you can crash hard. The pros who survive know how to keep their boots on the ground even when their heads are in the clouds. It’s the difference between riding the wave and getting dragged by it.

Build your tribe — Every great musician has a backstage army: bandmates, friends, mentors, the bartender who’s seen it all. You need people who remind you who you are when the industry tries to tell you otherwise. Lone wolves burn out. Crews endure.

Protect your mental game — This business will mess with your head if you let it. My psychologist buddy said it straight: musicians are emotional athletes. You’ve got to train your mind like you train your chops — rest, boundaries, perspective, and knowing when to step back before you snap a string.

Remember why you started — When the grind gets ugly, go back to the spark. The first riff that made your chest vibrate. The first crowd that screamed your name. The first time you realized music wasn’t a hobby — it was oxygen. That memory is your compass when the industry tries to spin you around.

Adapt without selling your soul — The biz changes faster than a Vegas slot machine. Trends flip. Venues close. Algorithms rewrite the rules overnight. The survivors evolve — but they never let the machine rewrite their identity. Bend don’t break!

Play the long game — Overnight success is a myth sold to rookies. Real careers are built brick by brick, gig by gig, heartbreak by heartbreak. The ones who make it aren’t always the most talented — they’re the ones who refuse to quit when the road gets dark.

Celebrate the small wins — A killer rehearsal. A new fan. A song idea that hits you at 2 AM. These are the sparks that keep the fire alive. Stack enough of them, and suddenly you’re unstoppable!

{My Take}

(This post is dedicated to two awesome musicians (friends of mine) who have experienced the highs and lows of the biz! I love you both. And wish you all the luck in the world in your return to music, because the music biz needs ya, and so do I)!

When you strip away the noise, the egos, the late‑night doubts, and the industry chaos, it all comes down to this: music is a long, loud, beautiful fight worth showing up for. The storm will come — it always does — but if you’ve got your tribe, your purpose, and your fire intact, you’ll walk out stronger than you walked in. Keep your head up, keep your heart plugged in, and keep playing like the world needs your sound, because it does! I do too!

Mind Over Matter: The Mindset Behind Real Music Success

 To all musicians out there.

Question,

Where do you see your success landing in the years ahead?

Hard work and discipline always leave a mark, but only you can decide whether the level you’ve reached in the music world truly satisfies you. Are you proud of where you stand today, or is there still a fire pushing you higher? And when the pressure hits, can your mindset be the force that carries you all the way to the bright lights of real music stardom?

Let’s talk about “Mind Over Matter” in the music industry. Does it truly exist, and if so, how much power does it really hold? For rising musicians and bands, mindset can be the fuel that drives them forward or the weight that drags them down. Does mental discipline help an artist climb toward the top, or can the wrong mindset quietly sabotage a promising career before it ever reaches its peak?

Your mindset is one of the most powerful — and most underrated — tools in the music industry. Talent matters, hustle matters, connections matter, but your headspace is the engine that keeps all of it moving. When your mind is sharp, disciplined, and aligned with your goals, you move differently. You rehearse with intention. You promote with confidence. You walk into venues like you belong there. That mental edge is what separates the artists who try from the artists who break through.

But here’s the truth most artists don’t want to admit: your mindset is either building your career or quietly breaking it.

A weak mindset shows up in the excuses — “We’ll promote next week,” “We’ll rehearse when everyone’s free,” “We’ll post after the gig,” “We’ll get serious when the timing’s right.”

A strong mindset shows up in the habits — the daily grind, the consistency, the willingness to do the unglamorous work when nobody’s watching. That’s the difference between a band that stays local forever and a band that becomes a name people talk about across the city, across the region, across the industry.

Mind over matter isn’t some motivational poster. It’s a survival skill in a business built on rejection, pressure, competition, and constant reinvention. The artists who rise aren’t always the most talented — they’re the ones who refuse to fold. They’re the ones who treat every rehearsal like a headline show, every social post like a handshake with a future fan, every gig like an audition for the next level.

And here’s the part most musicians overlook: Your mindset shapes your reputation long before your music does.

Venues notice the bands who show up early, promote hard, stay professional, and treat every stage with respect. Fans notice the artists who stay visible, stay grateful, and stay connected. Industry people notice the musicians who carry themselves like pros even when they’re still climbing.

Your mindset is your brand. Your discipline is your leverage. Your consistency is your currency.

So ask yourself — not as a dreamer, but as a working musician: Are you mentally built for the level of success you say you want? Are you training your mind with the same intensity you train your voice, your instrument, your stage presence? Are you preparing for the opportunities you haven’t even received yet?

Because the truth is simple: Success doesn’t just land on musicians. It lands on musicians who are ready.

If you want to rise in this industry — in Vegas or anywhere else — your mindset has to be stronger than your doubts, louder than your excuses, and more consistent than your circumstances.

Your future fans are out there. Your future stages are out there. Your future success is out there.

The question now is whether your mindset is ready to meet it!

The Psychology Factors Of Being The Visiting Team In Professional Sporting Events

 The psychology of being the visiting (Away) team in professional sports is a fascinating and complex topic. It involves a mix of environmental, social, and mental factors that can significantly influence performance. And even the outcome of the game.

Here's a breakdown of the key psychological dynamics.

Home-Field Advantage vs. Visiting Team Disadvantage

  • Crowd Influence: Hostile fans can be loud, disruptive, and intimidating. This increases stress and can impact focus and decision-making.

  • Familiarity: Home teams are used to the lighting, locker rooms, field/court quirks, and even sleep in their own beds. Visiting teams often have to adapt quickly to a new environment.

  • Referee Bias: Studies suggest officials may (unconsciously) favor the home team, especially in high-pressure or subjective situations.

Travel Fatigue & Routine Disruption

  • Physical Toll: Jet lag, irregular meals, hotel sleep — all can impair cognitive and physical performance.

  • Mental Fatigue: Being away from support systems (family, normal routines) can cause emotional drain and heightened anxiety.

  • Compressed Timeframes: Sometimes, teams arrive and leave on tight schedules, limiting practice time in the new environment.

Psychological Strategies To Cope

  • Team Cohesion: Visiting teams often lean heavily on each other, creating stronger bonds and “us against the world” mindsets.

  • Mental Rehearsal: Visualization and scenario-planning can help reduce anxiety about unfamiliar places or hostile crowds.

  • Resilience Training: Some teams use sports psychologists to train athletes in staying calm, focused, and motivated in tough settings.

Adaptability & Elite Mindset

  • Veteran Advantage: Experienced players usually handle the road better — they've seen it all and don’t get rattled as easily.

  • Focus Shift: Top athletes often use adversity as fuel, reframing negativity (boos, travel stress) as motivators.

  • “Business Trip” Mentality: Coaches sometimes downplay the environment and stress professionalism — get in, do the job, get out.

Statistical & Behavioral Evidence

  • Most major sports show consistent home-field advantage across decades — though it's declined slightly in recent years (possibly due to improved travel, neutral venues, or analytics)

  • It's all about Mental Toughness! Keeping Focused!

{My Thoughts}

While writing this article, I couldn't help thinking about our Arena League football team here in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Kings are playing their 3rd straight away game this coming weekend against the Idaho Horsemen.

The game will be broadcast on the National Arena League YouTube Channel.

{My Take}

In the end, the challenge of being the visiting team is more than just playing in a different stadium — it’s a test of focus, resilience, and mental toughness. While home-field advantage may offer comfort, visitors often reveal the truest measure of a team's character. In the silence of unfamiliar locker rooms and the roar of opposing fans, champions are quietly forged.
